6/27/2023 0 Comments Prison Poems by Mahvash Sabet![]() One is being held in solitary confinement in Evin Prison and the whereabouts of the other two are unknown. ![]() ![]() Thirteen individuals-among them Mahvash Sabet, Fariba Kamalabadi and Afif Naeimi, formerly part of the community’s leadership and prisoners of conscience who each spent a decade in jail-were arrested during the raids. What the Iranian government is doing is simultaneously an act of gross oppression and a brazen example of the worst kind of hate speech. The Baha’i International Community rejects these absurd and preposterous allegations as outright fabrications. The mention of kindergartens is an apparent pretext for the targeting of a number of Baha’is who are preschool teachers. The Ministry of Intelligence issued a formal statement about the moves-which came after weeks of escalating pressure on the Baha’is-and claimed the arrests were against members of the “Baha’i espionage party” and that those arrested were “propagating the teachings of the fabricated Baha’i colonialism and infiltrating educational environments” including kindergartens. ![]() ![]() Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence issued an appalling statement of oppressive hate propaganda against the persecuted Baha’i religious minority yesterday, 31 July, in an attempt to justify the raids on the homes and businesses of 52 Baha’is across Iran and the arrest or imprisonment of 13 individuals. ![]() 6/27/2023 0 Comments Only cowgirls get the blues book![]() Aquatint Copperplate process by which the plate is “bitten” by exposure to acid. ![]() Shipping and insurance charges are additional. (“Seems like a rather long time for the Anne Frank House to ponder whether it was a good idea to force a Jew into hiding,” Horn quips.) Documenting her visit to the Chinese city of Harbin, Horn recounts how Russian Jews built the town in the early 20th century, only to have their community decimated by Japanese occupiers in the 1930s. She notes that it took months for leaders of the Anne Frank House to reverse their policy preventing an employee from wearing his yarmulke. ![]() ![]() In this searing essay collection, novelist Horn ( Eternal Life) delves into the “many strange and sickening ways in which the world’s affection for dead Jews shapes the present moment.” Analyzing The Merchant of Venice, Holocaust memorials, and press coverage of a mass shooting at a Jersey City, N.J., kosher grocery store in 2019, among other topics, Horn comes to the conclusion that “the enormous public interest in past Jewish suffering” does not signify respect for living Jews. ![]() 6/26/2023 0 Comments Nir indistractable![]() ![]() Here's what he had to say about becoming indistractable today, when distractions surround us. ![]() We wanted to learn more about how to become indistractable ourselves, especially in this time when it seems more challenging than ever - so we asked him to share some of his techniques. After 5 years of studying human behavior, he developed a research-backed, 4-step framework for becoming indistractable, which he detailed in his book Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life. As a Stanford lecturer, best-selling author, and behavioral design expert, Nir has dedicated years of his research and expertise to learning about distractions - and how we can better avoid them. To behavioral expert Nir Eyal, being indistractable is something he's studied extensively in recent years. This means we set out each day to complete our important tasks while avoiding distractions, which could derail us from achieving our flow state. ![]() Many of us strive to be "indistractable". ![]() ![]() ![]() Stefan is a vampire, and Elena’s in danger just by being around him. ![]() ![]() ![]() Against this background, the German commander Ludendorff in particular is derided for puffing his tactical gains into brilliant strategic breakthroughs. Stone sees Russian military entropy in the context of the general problem of WW I: Nineteenth century progress could provide mass armies with food and railroads but, past the rail terminals, communications and mobility were still primitive, especially for the Russian side. Petersburg administrators, who in any case were largely devoted to obsolete ""fortress"" concepts. The book presents intricate but lucid mappings of the factions within the Tsarist government and army-power slipped to far-flung commanders, away from the St. Russian output of key materiel expanded during the war, and its large, modern industries were not themselves to blame for the economic chaos which, to Stone's regret, produced the November revolution of 1917. His two most important arguments: the shortage of shells blamed by the Russians for their defeats by the Germans was essentially a problem of army command and supply structures, not a ""crippling material weakness"" on the part of the Russian economy and, indeed, the Russian economy itself was suffering a crisis of growth, not decline. Stone proceeds to dispatch the cliches one by one. An elegant study of an aspect of WW I-the Russian campaign against the Germans and Austro-Hungarians-which has generally been relegated by military historians to a series of overworked postscripts. ![]() ![]() ![]() The story is told from both Larkyra’s and Darius’s viewpoint, so there we know straight away Darius is a good man, who cares deeply for his people and is horribly abused by his uncle instead of having to wait several hundred pages for the Larkyra to find out. I was really intrigued by the premise of the weather being permanently stormy and grey in Lachlan as a result of the Duke’s sadness. ![]() There are vivid descriptions that bring the world of Aadilor to life- I loved the description of the thief kingdom as seen through Darius’s eyes when he visits the land for the first time. But of course, her mission is complicated by her growing attraction to the tortured ( literally) Darius who happens to be the Duke’s stepson. On becoming an adult, she is given an assignment to pose as the Duke of Lachlan’s potential bride to stop him stealing drugs from the Thief Kingdom then using this to fuel his magic and abuse his tenants. Larkyra power lies in her voice, and she can slay monsters with her voice but this is a gift she uses sparingly. ![]() ![]() The Mousai helps the Thief King reign over his kingdom where magic exists hidden away from the rest of the world. Larkyra is one of the Mousai, a trio of sorceresses, who just happens to be sisters. This is a sweet romance set in a fantasy setting with a feisty, heroine and a tortured hero but I really wanted to learn more about the world and the Thief King and his kingdom. ![]() 6/25/2023 0 Comments House rules by chloe neill![]() ![]() Seriously, our leadership structure was a mess. I guess now she was a cocaptain, since Luc had essentially reassumed the position. ![]() ![]() Ethan appeared at my side and gestured across the lawn to a broad-shouldered man who chatted with Kelley, who'd served as the captain of Cadogan's guards when Luc was promoted. "Not bad for a last-minute party." "It was only a last-minute party because we've been focusing on the transition," I pointed out. Ethan worked the crowd like a master diplomat, moving from cluster to cluster of vampires, shaking hands and listening attentively while they chatted. Some of them had been snubbed or excluded by the House system, and some of them had purposely chosen the Rogue life. They wore heavy biker leathers and tie-dyed shirts, classic Goth ensembles and cocktail dresses. But the others wouldn't have passed a military inspection. A few were outfitted in the black military-style duds we'd seen before. If the fashion was any indication, the crew here today was much more eccentric than the Rogues who'd previously visited the House. They seemed to be mixing relatively well - which was the entire point of a mixer, really. PAS DE DEUX An hour later, the yard was full of vampires of the Rogue and Cadogan persuasions. ![]() |
